Informs Markham that the name of the paper "The Golden Age" has been changed to "Optimist", using one word as he suggested. Would like to offer the presidency to Mr. Ingersoll and asks Markham opinion. Informs him also of the change-over of the Junior Publ. Co to the Howell Publ. Co. Sends her regards to his wife.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
